In the beginning, there were the six Divine Spirits who
created the world. Terra created the land. Neptunia created the seas. Sylvia
created the skies. Lucia created the light; Nocturna, the darkness. Finally, Vita
created all the creatures of the world, including humans in Her own image.
At first, all Vita's creations had eternal life, as the Divine Spirits did. However, the
other Divine Spirits were indignant. How, they argued, does a lesser being such as a cow or a dog deserve to live forever as a goddess might? Vita argued that the other Spirits' creations were as ever-lasting as they, and that depriving only Hers of immortality, deservedly or not, was unfair.
Eventually, the Spirits agreed on what became known as the First Divine Compromise: all the creatures of the earth were given mortal bodies, but humans, created in the Spirits' likeness, would
receive eternal life through their souls, which would live on in a special realm
crafted by Sylvia and Lucia that they called "Heaven".
In order to test these new designs, the Spirits descended to
Earth and asked for a sacrifice. A young woman volunteered and was swiftly struck down by a bolt of lightning, becoming the first human to die and ascend to
Heaven. To honour her sacrifice, the Divine Spirits gifted her their power; the
woman was thus reincarnated as Cassandra, the seventh Divine Spirit and the guardian of
Heaven.
As time passed, and the souls of the living began to depart to Heaven, Cassandra began to protest that some
humans were not worthy of eternal life, and did not belong in Her paradise. The kind and the virtuous, the brave and the innocent, were forced to share the afterlife with rapists, murderers and all
manner of depraved beings, many of whom carried on their wicked ways in the
afterlife where there was little that could be done to stop them. Cassandra's eternal paradise was in danger of becoming anything but a paradise.
After much debate,
the Spirits came to the Second Divine Compromise, and a new realm, Hell, was
crafted by Terra and Nocturna. Those that Cassandra would not allow into Heaven would be sent to this new realm instead, where they would be forever punished for their sins. Using their
powers, the Divine Spirits created an eighth Spirit, Lilith, to watch over this
new realm.
Over time, skewed by her experience of dealing with only the
worst of humanity, Lilith began to despise all humans, and eventually resolved
to destroy all living humans so that none would ever enter Hell again. The other
seven Spirits, fighting alongside their creations, managed to defeat and subdue Lilith. In the
Last Divine Compromise, the eight Spirits sealed themselves away inside
crystals for all eternity, only to be woken should they be discovered by a
truly virtuous human - and should this event ever occur, it would finally
convince Lilith of the inherent goodness of humanity.
I have a guess as to said virtuous human's name....
